Do you trust that the electricity in your home will be there each and every time you flip a switch to turn a light on? How about each and every time you turn the stove on to cook? Heat up coffee in the microwave? Imagine what our lives would be like without electricity! We would not be able to do the things that we take for granted each and every day. Cool air from our air conditioner, hot water from our hot water heater, clean clothes from the washer and dryer......conveniences we use daily and don't even think about.
Do you remember the busy hurricane season of 2004 here in Florida. I do! Hurricane Frances downed a tree in the back yard, falling through the power lines. We were without electricity for 10 days. Food in the freezer thawed, no hot water (we had water fortunately and those cold showers certainly felt good), no tv, no lights after dark.....it absolutely changed our lifestyle for those 10 days. We realized how used to the convenience and power that electricity provided for us. We are dependent on electricity for our daily living.
By accepting our dependence on electricity, and the conveniences it provides, we become more 'independent'. I can sit here in air conditioned comfort with my computer and type this blog. I was able to microwave my soup for lunch and get ice out of my freezer to put in my water. I and 'independent' because of my 'dependence' on electricity. I am able to get more things accomplished because of my dependence on electricity.
What about our dependence on Jesus Christ? Imagine if we depended on Him as effortlessly as we turn on a light switch. Imagine the independence we would have if we realized the power of Christ that lives in us and what we can accomplish. That power does live in His believers you know! Imagine the possibilities! What if you KNEW that your dependence on Christ would make you more independent to live your life for Him.
Dependence can be a negative word! We crave independence from the time we are a toddler. "I can do it myself mommy". And from that moment on we fight to be independent. We want it our way, in our time, under our set of circumstances.....our world today honors independence. What if, though, we ALL realized that our dependence on Christ MAKES us more INdependent. TRUST Him, that He has our backs, that He has gone before us.... you do remember He wins in the end don't you?
So every time you turn on a light switch, or the microwave, open the refrigerator door or feel the cool air of your air conditioner from the vents......remember this story. Dependence on Christ leads to the ultimate independence to live our lives for Him in everything we do.
All we have to do is trust!
